 The Minneapolis branch of the Workers International League participated today in an anti-war demonstration organized by the Iraq Peace Action Coalition, as part of a national weekend of anti-war and immigrant rights actions. There were only 150 to 200 people present, but it was a lively and energetic crowd, chanting slogans, listening to speakers and music, and discussing the war, the economy, and the elections.

 Panic has gripped the stock markets of the world. Things are completely out of control, and there is nothing that governments can say or do that can stop it. As in 1929, every time people thought that the worst had come, further falls were just round the corner. Nobody knows how far share prices have still to go. The world economy now finds itself in unsheltered waters. |

 Millions of US families are being threatened with eviction from their homes, some because they cannot pay their mortgages and others because their landlords cannot pay theirs. Now a County Sheriff in Illinois, has refused to carry out any more evictions. |

 The antiwar movement, like the war itself, has had quite an intricate history of development. The U.S. is currently involved in two wars in the Middle East: Afghanistan, which started back in October of 2001, and Iraq, which began in March of 2003. U.S. involvement in these two wars has now gone on longer than its direct involvement in World War I, World War II and Korea combined. |

Note is made of the consciousness of the working class and the changes it went through, starting with the postwar period and tracing these attributes to the present day. Note is made of opposition currents in trade unions and changes in the consciousness of the working class. The need for a mass party of labor and of general tendencies that could lead toward the development of a labor party are also discussed.

 It was not the immediate crisis on Wall Street that has “caused” the public outrage against the Big Business bail out. This was only the “straw that broke the camel’s back.” This has simply brought to the surface deep-seated discontent that had been brewing for years.

 On Wednesday October 1st, there was a small protest action held outside of the U.S. Federal Court in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, which the WIL intervened in. Only a few days prior to this, Jobs with Justice (JWJ) had called for demonstrations throughout the country in those cities where they are active. However, even with such short notice, around 40 to 60 people turned out to the protest. |

 On Tuesday, September 23rd, there was just the mention on the left of the possibility of an emergency rally against the bail-out plan for Thursday. By Wednesday, the AFL-CIO was forced to organize something, a reflection of the pressure on the leadership from below and the more or less spontaneous organization against the bail-out plan.
