The workers at the Shahdadkot
Textile Mills have been struggling against the privatisation and subsequent
closure of the plant. During the elections the PPP candidates promised action
once elected but none has been forthcoming. The only solution is
nationalisation.

Another example of the growing militancy of
Pakistani workers is the strike at PTCL where the "daily wage" workers have
been on strike for two weeks, demanding they be taken on as permanent workers.

"daily wage", workers in the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority. They have been
working there for years but can be sacked at a moment's notice.

On Saturday February 23rd over 10 supporters of the
PTUDC in Montreal attended a workshop about the recent elections in
Pakistan. The workshop was hosted by the International Marxist
Tendency.

A motion of affiliation to the PTUDC was successfully passed
at the meeting of the University
of East Anglia Union Council
on 21st February. The Union is now officially affiliated and an
emergency motion on Pakistan
was also passed to be sent to the NUS Executive in time for the National
Conference.

Over a dozen people attended a meeting on the recent fraudulent elections in Pakistan on a cold blustery Toronto evening. The meeting was hosted by Canadian supporters of the Pakistani Trade Union Defence Campaign (PTUDC), the first such meeting to date in Canada.

After many hesitations and delays, not least because of the brutal
assassination of Benazir Bhutto and hundreds of her supporters, the Pakistani
parliamentary elections are scheduled to go ahead on 18 February. These
elections are different to any other ever held in Pakistan. We have received an
appeal by three candidates who are sponsored by the Pakistan Trade Union
Defence Campaign and are
standing on a clear socialist program.
