Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper has just shut down Parliament until the end of January. However, it appears that this blatantly undemocratic act is popular across the country. Why? Because the maneuvers of all the parties have completely disgusted Canadians. The sell-out deal between Dion and Layton was completely incapable of raising any enthusiasm amongst the working class. |

On Monday 1st December, just before 5pm, Dion, Layton and Duceppe presented their agreement for a Liberal-NDP coalition government backed by the Bloc Quebecois.
1) Troops remain in Afghanistan. 2) The $50-billion corporate tax cuts stand. 3) No NDP member to have any influence over Finance. 4) Prime Minister Dion selects which 6 NDP MPs will enter cabinet.
It is hard to imagine a more craven sell-out. |

On Thursday, November 25, in the evening, three trade union leaders were assassinated in Aragua, Venezuela. Fightback condemns these brutal killings of workers' leaders whose only crime was to stand firm in the defence of workers' interests against the intimidation and terrorism of the capitalist class. We call on the international workers' movement to mobilise against these killings and demand that those responsible be identified and brought to justice. |

We encourage all of our readers to act now and send letters to Jack Layton and the Federal NDP saying, “Defeat the Conservatives, no Liberal-NDP Coalition!” Those who go on record as being opposed to this alliance now will be shown to have taken the correct stance as the economic crisis worsens. The NDP must not act as a left screen for Liberal attacks. |

With the financial crisis as a backdrop, Stephen Harper’s minority Conservative government may not survive another week. Less than two months after the last election the government is facing a confidence vote on its budget update and all three opposition parties say they will vote against. Rumours are rife of a Liberal-NDP coalition to replace the Conservatives. The Conservatives must be defeated, but there can be no coalition with the bosses’ parties. |

Supporters of Fightback are proposing the following resolutions at this weekend's Ontario New Democratic Youth Convention, Nov 21-23. We believe that these resolutions should form the basis for a socialist platform for the NDP. The world financial system is in crisis, proving that capitalism does not work for working families. Now is the time to put forward a bold socialist vision to save jobs and build a just society. Don’t let anybody tell you it can’t be done! |

The Ontario New Democratic Youth (ONDY) will be holding its annual convention in Toronto from the 21st to the 23rd of November. As the world watches the capitalist system enter its latest and most dire crisis, this conference will have increased importance for the future of the ONDY and the NDP. |

Premier Jean Charest has pushed through an election for Dec. 8th, against the grumbling of some of the leading Liberals, who are worried this could be a big gamble. He may have no choice, delaying the vote would likely create the worst conditions possible for the ruling party. Québec’s economy cannot defy gravity. We have walked off a cliff along with the rest of the world, and Charest hopes to have a quick election before we collectively look down and realize what’s happened. |

Workers at York University in Toronto have been on strike since November 6th. The political impact of this strike is in many ways far more important than the actual bargaining issues. York University workers, represented by CUPE local 3903, have traditionally been amongst the most militant in Canada. The York contract is a model for all university workers. Many of these workers are also students and therefore the victory of this strike is a victory in the fight for free accessible education for working class students. Thousands of students recently demonstrated for lower fees in numbers not seen in a decade and many other campus workers are heading into possible strikes. Therefore this strike has the potential of becoming the spark that ignites a generalized movement.
Sign on to Fightback's solidarity campaign to ensure a victory at York! |
